FAQ

What are the requirements for an automotive technician?

You must have high school, or GED, and be able to read and write well in English and math. You must also be able to read, and write. After passing a written test, you will need to complete a series of practical tests before you are allowed to begin working.

What do I need to know about car mechanics?

For an auto mechanic job, you don’t have to be an expert in cars. All you need to know is how to fix things. Most people start by fixing things like changing tires or fitting brake pads.

You'll need to know how to read diagrams, understand written instructions and follow basic rules of good practice. You must also be able judge if parts need to replaced or repaired.

It is important to understand that vehicle repairs should only be attempted by those who have received the proper training. This is especially true if your job involves expensive parts like transmissions or engines.

Even though you won’t need to know much more about cars, you will still need to have an in-depth understanding of mechanics and physics. This includes understanding the mechanics of how engines and brakes work.

You should also be ready to handle all kinds of situations. If your vehicle has been in an accident, you might need to be able to handle it. Experience with accidents and breakdowns is also a must.

Finally, you must be willing to learn new skills quickly. In order to be able diagnose and fix problems, you will also need to know how to do simple maintenance tasks such tightening bolts.

To work as an automotive mechanic, do I need a degree? Can I study part-time?

Although it's not mandatory, a degree can help. Employers will prefer candidates who have completed a degree. It shows that you've worked hard and are determined to succeed.

But, this doesn't mean you have to stop working while studying. Some universities permit students to do coursework during summer holidays and complete their studies later in a year. Some universities allow students to take part-time classes throughout the year.

What type of job is there for a car mechanic?

There are three main areas of employment for car mechanics:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

Most people think of this as the first step to becoming a mechanic. It's actually the easiest way to start. You can either work in a shop run by someone else, or start your business.

If you plan to work in a shop, you must apply to join the union. Once you have been accepted into the Union, you'll be given training by the union.

Once you complete the training, it's time to get started.

If you plan to open your own garage you will need to register with government. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

You will receive a license to run your garage once you have registered.

Your license will allow you to sell spare parts and do minor repairs. It won't allow you to fix major engine problems.

Customers will expect you to not only sell spare parts but also provide advice and guidance.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships only employ mechanics who have a specific skill set. They may be trained to replace or repair tires, or they may specialize in brakes.

Some dealerships hire general mechanics to handle all aspects of car repair.

These positions often require applicants to undergo specific training before being allowed to work. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships even recruit graduates straight from university. These graduates are familiar with the fundamentals of mechanical engineering so they can easily learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. They tend to be focused on high-quality service.

Independent garages can pay higher wages because they aren't associated with any company. This means that these jobs are usually more lucrative than those at dealerships.

But this doesn't mean that independent garages are necessarily better places to work. Many business owners prefer to own their businesses and not delegate the responsibility to others.

This could lead to you working long hours with little control over your day.

Additionally, you should expect to earn lower wages if employed by a dealership.

The good news is that you can easily switch between different kinds of jobs. To work at a dealership you will need to contact your employer to see if he is open to the idea of hiring you.

Alternatively, if you'd like to work at an independent garage, then you could try applying directly to the owner of the garage.

It's not always easy to find a job. There are many factors that affect how much you make.

This could include the type of vehicle that you are working on and whether or not you charge an additional for labor.

How To

How to Become an Auto Technician

An automotive technician performs repairs and maintains vehicles. He/she is employed at automobile dealerships, garages, service centres, and auto shops. Customers can rely on him/her to fix their cars, trucks and motorcycles. An automotive technician must be capable of diagnosing problems and making repairs safely, accurately and efficiently.

An associate degree from a vocational school is required for anyone who wishes to become an automotive technician. After completing this program, he/she will need to pass the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence's (ASE) certification exam. ASE stands to American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists two sections. The first section tests your mechanical skills, while the second tests your practical knowledge. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These locations can be found online, or by contacting your local car dealer.

A candidate must pass the state exam after passing the test to become an automotive technician. This process varies depending on where the applicant lives. Some states require candidates to complete a training program, while others let them study on their own. Some states require technicians to be licensed immediately upon receiving their license. Other states wait until they have been employed as automotive technicians for at least six month.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeship programs typically last three to four years. During this time, a student learns how to perform basic repairs, such as changing oil, adjusting brakes, replacing tires, cleaning spark plugs, inspecting engine compartments, and performing routine maintenance. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Most schools offer classes during regular business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

Once a student finishes his/her apprenticeship, it is possible to become a Journeyman. Journeymen can spend up to five years learning how major systems work, including transmissions, differentials. They also learn how to adjust steering gear and suspensions. They are also taught how to troubleshoot electrical components and remanufacture engines. Because they have the experience and knowledge to do the job right, employers love hiring journeymen.

Candidates who pass the required exams are eligible for a license. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 1.7 million automotive mechanic jobs were available in 2010. This number is expected to increase by 18% between 2009 and 2020. If a candidate decides to open his/her own shop, he/she should prepare to invest many thousands of dollars in equipment and supplies.

The salary of an automotive technician will depend on many factors including where you live, your education level, experience and the type of employer. On average, a jobless person could expect to earn $20,000 annually. A person with only a high-school diploma could make around $21,000 annually. Associate's degrees earn approximately $24,000 per annum. A technician with a bachelor's degree earned approximately $27,000 annually. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. Salary increases are common, so a professional who earns less than $30,000 now could reasonably expect to earn $40,000 or more in just a few years.
