What should I know about car mechanics

To be an auto mechanic, you don't have to know much about cars. You only need to know how to fix them. This is why most people get started with simple jobs such as changing brake pads or tires. Then they move on to more difficult repairs.

You will need to understand written instructions, read diagrams and follow the basic rules of good practices. You will also need to understand how parts should be replaced or repaired.

It's important to remember that you shouldn't attempt to repair vehicles without having received proper training and guidance. This is especially true if your job involves expensive parts like transmissions or engines.

Although you won't be required to know much about cars you should have a solid understanding of the fundamentals and principles of mechanical engineering. This is how you understand the mechanisms behind engines and brakes.

Noting that all situations are possible, it is important to be prepared. You might be required to work on a vehicle that was involved in an accident. You'll also need experience dealing with breakdowns and accidents.

It is important to be open to learning new skills quickly. In order to be able diagnose and fix problems, you will also need to know how to do simple maintenance tasks such tightening bolts.

How do I prepare for a mechanic apprenticeship?

It is important that you understand the ramifications of your actions. You must understand the workings of cars. This way, you know where to start when you go on your first day at the garage.

Also, you need to know how fix simple problems, such as tires and lights that aren't working.

This should help you learn how to diagnose issues and repair them yourself.

For the purpose of putting them back together again, you'll need to be able to identify how each piece fits together.

These are all things that will make you a competent mechanic.

What are the different types of jobs available in car mechanic?

There are three major areas of employment that car mechanics work in:

  • Automotive repair shops
  • Dealerships
  • Independent garages

Automotive repair shops

It's where most people start to think about becoming a mechanic. In fact, it's probably the easiest way to get started. Either you can work in a shop that is owned by another person or start your own business.

If you are interested in working at a shop you will need to apply for membership to a union. Once accepted into the union you will be trained by the union.

Once the training is completed, you can start working.

You will need to register if your garage is going to be open. After you register, you will be required to meet specific standards.

You will receive a license to run your garage once you have registered.

Your license will permit you to sell spares parts and perform minor repairs. You can't fix major engine problems with your license.

As well as selling spare parts you will need to offer advice and direction to customers.

Dealership jobs

Most dealerships employ mechanics who specialize in one area of the car. They might be able to only fix brakes or replace tires.

Some dealers also have general mechanics that can handle all aspects.

These positions often require applicants to undergo specific training before being allowed to work. Employers can then choose the best candidates for their job.

Some dealerships will even hire graduates right out of university. These graduates are familiar with the fundamentals of mechanical engineering so they can easily learn about cars.

Independent garages

Independent garages don't belong to any particular dealership. Instead, independent garages tend to concentrate on providing high-quality services.

Independent garages don't have to be associated with any particular company. This allows them to offer higher wages. As a result, these jobs are generally better paid than those at dealerships.

However, independent garages do not necessarily offer better workplaces. Many business owners prefer to be in control of their businesses than to delegate it to employees.

You might find yourself working long hours but having no control over what happens in the day.

You should also expect to earn lower wages than if you were employed at a dealership.

The good news? You can easily switch between different types of jobs. You can switch jobs easily if you are interested in working at a dealership. Simply ask your employer if they would be open to hiring you as a mechanic.

You could also apply directly to an owner of a garage if that's what you want.

The bad news? Finding a new position isn't always easy. There are plenty of other factors that influence how much you earn.

This could include the type of vehicle that you are working on and whether or not you charge an additional for labor.

How To

How to become an Automotive Technician

An automotive technician is responsible for vehicle maintenance and repair. He/she works at automotive shops, garages or service centers. He/she helps customers fix their cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, lawn mowers, snowmobiles, tractors, trailers, farm equipment, planes, helicopters, jet skis, watercraft, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, golf carts, etc. An automotive technician must be able to diagnose problems and make repairs quickly, safely, accurately, and efficiently.

To become an automotive technician, a person must first earn an associate's degree from a vocational college. After completing the program, he/she must pass ASE certification. ASE stands in for American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The ASE certification test consists of two sections. The first section tests for mechanical knowledge, the second for practical skills. To pass the test you must go to one of the authorized testing facilities. These locations are available online or through your local automotive dealer.

After passing the test, a candidate must pass a state examination before becoming licensed as an automotive technician. This process is different depending on where you live. Some states require that applicants attend a training class, while others allow them freedom to study at their own pace. Some states issue licenses to technicians as soon as they get their license. Others wait until they have worked at least six months as an automotive technician.

To get started as an automotive technician, a person should apply to a local automotive dealership. Most new employees work as apprentices after they have been hired. Apprenticeships typically last three years. The apprenticeship program teaches students how to change oil, adjust brakes, replace tires, clean spark plugs, inspect engine compartments, and perform routine maintenance. Some students are able to perform more advanced repairs such as replacing shocks and installing air filters. Schools offer classes during business hours. However, there are some schools that offer evening classes for those who need them.

After completing an apprenticeship, a student becomes a journeyman. Journeymen typically spend four to five years learning how to install major systems, such as transmissions, differentials, steering gear, suspensions, and drive shafts. They also learn to perform complex repairs, such as remanufacturing engines, rebuilding transmissions, and troubleshooting electrical components. Employers prefer to hire journeymen as they are familiar with the job and can anticipate customer needs.

If a candidate successfully passes the required exams and receives a license, he/she might want to consider starting his/her own shop. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there were nearly 1.7 million jobs available for automotive mechanics in 2010. This number was expected increase 18% between 2009 - 2020. The candidate should expect to invest thousands of money in equipment and supplies if he/she decides to start his/her shop.

Automotive technicians' salaries depend on many factors such as the employer, whereabouts, education level and experience. A jobless person could make an average of $20,000 annually. A high school diploma is all that's required to earn approximately $21,000 annually. Earnings for those with an associate's diploma are approximately $24,000/year. Technicians with a bachelor's degree earn about $27,000 per annum. A master's degree earns around $32,000 per a year. A common trend is for salary increases to occur so a professional making less than $30,000 can reasonably expect to be earning $40,000 or more within a few years.
